PARKLAND (CBSMiami) –  A fast-moving fire ripped through a Parkland home on Thursday, leaving a family devastated over a home they lived in for more than 30 years.

Firefighters battled the fire at the home, located at 8500 NW 72nd Street, for several hours.

The homeowners were inside  but managed to get out safely.

Eliot Lazowick lives next door and said a loud explosion and a pop woke him up at around 4 a.m. When he went outside, he was shocked by what he saw.

"It's crazy. You don't expect to come outside and see your neighbors house burning to the ground. The flames were really high, about 30 to 40 feet in the air. The house was fully engulfed," said Lazowick.

Coral Springs Fire Department, Broward County Sheriff Fire Rescue and Margate Fire Department were on scene to battle the blaze.

More than a dozen firefighters responded but putting the fire out quickly was a challenge. The home is in a rural area in Parkland and the nearest fire hydrant is 2,000 feet away.

"It was a challenge getting water to the trucks. We were out of water quick and tried using drifting measures from the water in canals but it was not sufficient so we had to use other measures of getting water to the area which deleted operations a little bit," said Captain Richard Antonini with Coral Springs Fire.

"We do have an issue out here because we don't have fire hydrants. The nearest is half a mile away, so I know the first truck, from what I understand, dropped all the water but it was not enough," said Lazowick.

A firefighter did suffer minor injuries and was transported to the hospital, according to Coral Springs Fire.

The cause of the fire is not known.
