Police shoot, kill man in Boca Raton

MIAMI - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the fatal shooting of a man by a Boca Raton police officer on Wednesday morning.

Police said it happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. along NW 2nd Ave. between NW 2nd St. and Palmetto Park Rd.

Authorities did not say what led to the shooting, but CBS News Miami has learned the officer involved was unhurt during the incident.

Police had not yet identified the person who died.

Boca Raton police posted on their X account, "The investigation is ongoing. There is no threat to the public. Roads will remain closed until further notice."

Witnesses said the shooting happened in a matter of minutes. They reported hearing the officer shout commands, at a man who appeared to be homeless, "Hey! Stop I'm going to tase you" and "Get on the ground." However, they said the unidentified man did not comply.

Following that, witnesses recalled seeing the officer tase the man twice.

That's when they said the man lunged at the officer and then the officer fired three shots.

In a matter of seconds after that, witnesses said officers responded to the scene and attempted CPR on the man.

Nicholas Cavallo, who has lived in the area for 14 years, said his kids walk the street where this happened and one of them heard the gunfire. He said he's never seen anything like this happen in the area.

The intersection of 2nd Ave. and 2nd St. reopened around 4:35 p.m., Boca Raton PD said.

As is the case involving police shootings, the FDLE will investigate this incident.
