OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) -- Riddled with bullet holes, a white Chevrolet Sonic sat in a grassy embankment off west Cypress Creek Road near the I-95 overpass Wednesday morning -- now part of a murder investigation.

"Oakland Park road patrol responded and found two men injured," said Joy Oglesby of the Broward Sheriff's Office. "Those men were transported to Broward Health North where one man was pronounced dead."

He's identified as Leonard Hankins, 24, of Pompano Beach. BSO said three other men were in the car with Hankins when someone shot at them.

Just prior to the attack, they were all at a nearby bar called Cheers on the east side of Cypress Creek Road.

However, an employee at Cheers told CBS4 News that no one saw or heard anything unusual Tuesday night and in their release to the media, investigators said "it's not known whether anything happened at the bar."

The driver lost control, went through a fence and came to rest on the eastbound side of Cypress Creek Road.

Crime scene investigators spent hours there gathering evidence and part of Cypress Creek was shut down as they worked to figure out why the men were targeted.

"We are not sure if there was an altercation at the bar. Detectives want the public to contact them if they saw something at the bar or along the route before the car crashed into the embankment," said Oglesby.

The wounded victim's injuries are considered non life-threatening.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Crime Stoppers (954) 493-TIPS.
