MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Here we go again. Check your batteries, water and canned food supplies because the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane season is officially underway.
June 1st is the official start to hurricane season which runs through November 30.
This year's season is expected to be slower than an average season with 12 named storm, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.
But that's no guarantee that a storm won't make a catastrophic landfall.
That's why every South Floridian should be ready for a storm. It's been more than 10 years since the historic 2004 hurricane season, when four hurricanes affected Florida for the first time since record-keeping began: Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. There were 15 named storms that season, nine of which were hurricanes. But those four hurricanes remain among the costliest hurricanes to hit the U.S.
This season got off to an early start when Tropical Storm Ana brought heavy rain to the North Carolina coast in early May.
The next named storm that forms this season will be Bill.

This year, researchers have new tools to study tropical weather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will continue to try flying drones into hurricanes, and the University of Miami has opened a lab where hurricane conditions are generated in a tank. Two Tampa-based "hurricane hunter" aircraft also are getting major overhauls.
