16th Florida Panther Dies After Car Collision
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Another Panther has died in Florida after being hit by a car on Thursday, making it the 16th panther death in the state for 2014.
The 1-2-year old female panther was hit by a car around midnight on US-41 near Collier County, according to officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The panther survived the collisions and was taken to an emergency veterinarian to asses her condition.
Due to the grave nature of her injuries, they decided to euthanize her.
Her body will be taken to the FWC Wildlife Research Lab in Gainesville for a complete necropsy.
While this is the 16th panther death, she is the 11th panther to die due to a car collision in 2014.
According to FWC, the estimated population of panthers in the state is between 100 to 160.
