Woman fatally shot in South Los Angeles while breaking up fight on Metro bus

Woman shot trying to break up fight on Metro bus near LAX, police say

A woman was fatally shot while she was trying to break up a fight on a Metro bus in South Los Angeles on Friday, authorities confirmed.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a man, about 20, and an 18-year-old woman were involved in a confrontation inside of a LA Metro bus around 10:47 p.m.

At one point during that confrontation, the man allegedly pulled a handgun and shot the woman in the chest. Investigators say she was trying to break up a fight between her boyfriend and the suspect. She allegedly pulled out some pepper spray, which police say prompted the suspect to produce a firearm.

She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Her identity is yet to be revealed publicly.

After hearing the shots, the bus driver pulled over immediately near the intersection of Manchester and Belford, said a Metro spokesperson.

The LA Metro confirmed in a statement that the incident took place on Metro Bus Line 115 near LAX.

"Metro extends its sympathies to the victim's family and friends and thanks the Los Angeles Fire and Police Departments for their prompt response," the statement reads.

It's unclear exactly how many people were on the bus when the incident occurred.

LAPD couldn't confirm whether the suspect, only identified as a man in his 20s, had been apprehended as of 5 a.m. Saturday. It's not yet clear if the shooting was gang-related.

No additional details were immediately made available.
