Teenage Boy Fatally Struck By 2 Cars While Riding His Bicycle To School

PACOIMA (CBSLA.com) —A 15-year-old boy riding his bike to school was fatally struck by two cars Tuesday in the Pacoima area.

The crash was reported around 7 a.m. in the 11700 block of Glenoaks Boulevard near Vaughn Street, according to police.

The boy, identified Tuesday as Saul Lopez, was riding to Vaughn International Studies Academy Charter School.

Investigators say two vehicles -- a white truck headed south on Glenoaks Blvd. and another white truck headed east on Vaghn St. -- collided and crashed into the boy, who was pinned between the cars.

Witnesses tried unsuccessfully to free him.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The crash was the sixth time a bicyclist has died in a collision with a car this year in the San Fernando Valley, the LAPD said. Last year, there were three such deaths.

"We're asking everyone who is driving to please pay close attention to your driving," said LAPD Det. Bill Bustos.

The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to a hospital for treatment of a minor injury.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Investigators are working to determine if one of the cars ran a red light.
