Several DMVs across Southern California adjust hours for Real ID applications before deadline
Some Department of Motor Vehicles across Southern California are adjusting their hours to help people get their Real IDs on time.
The DMV is helping people get this completed by opening up extra early to help people get their Real ID before the May deadline.
If your current ID does not have the California Golden Bear with the star in the right corner, then you need a new Real ID card.
Real IDs are more secure and harder to counterfeit.
The deadline is May 7 and by then you must have a Real ID to board domestic flights or to get into federal buildings, like courthouses.
To make the process move faster, people can do most of the application online. Background information and necessary documents can all be filled out online. The application requires one proof of identity document, like a passport, birth certificate, or valid employment authorization document. It also requires two different printed documents that show your California mailing address, which must show your first and last name with the same mailing address that is listed on your application.
If the application is completed online, the DMV said it should only take about 15 minutes in the office to finish.
The DMV is opening 18 offices across the state early, starting Monday, through the end of June.
There are locations in Southern California that will be opening at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays:
- Thousand Oaks
- Van Nuys
- Arleta
- Glendale
- Pasadena
- Culver City
- Westminster
- Costa Mesa
- San Clemente
- Rancho Cucamonga
The extra hour in the morning is reserved only for people getting their Real ID.
If travelers have a U.S. passport, they will still be able to board planes. If the passport is valid, people can wait to upgrade to a Real ID when their driver's license or ID is up for renewal.
