5 wounded in shooting outside South Los Angeles strip mall

Five people were wounded during a shooting outside of a South Los Angeles strip mall on Tuesday afternoon. 

It happened near a market at S. Figueroa Street and Manchester Avenue at around 2:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. 

Upon arrival, officers found five people, four men and one woman, suffering from gunshot wounds. All five were taken to nearby hospitals. There was no information available on their conditions or identities. The ages of the victims range from 19 to 35 years old. 

"It's an ongoing investigation. ... Our investigators are here, our detectives are here. We continue to scour the location for video, for additional witnesses, for additional evidence," said LAPD Captain Adrian Gonzalez. 

Investigators say that three suspects, all men in their 20s, fled from the area in an unknown direction inside of a white Honda Civic. They said that they are investigating the matter as a potential gang-related incident. 

They believe there were multiple shooters involved. 

During the news conference, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said that the shooting happened across the street from a school. 

"The senseless in this, the callousness of where they did it and when they did it should really hit all of us," McDonnell said. "So, my ask is that if anybody out there knows what happened here, knows who is responsible, please let us know."

SkyCal flew over the shooting scene, where the parking lot in front of several businesses was closed by police. One of the businesses appeared to have a shattered window from the incident. 

Despite previously telling CBS News Los Angeles that one of the victims had died after being taken to a nearby hospital, police said during a news conference that all five of the victims remained hospitalized in various conditions.
