1 Shooting Suspect Dead, Another Critically Injured After Plowing Into LAFD Truck During Pursuit

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  — A van carrying two shooting suspects crashed into a LAFD truck following a pursuit Wednesday with one of the suspects dead and another reportedly left in critical condition.

Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9, said police were in pursuit of the van believing the suspects inside were involved with a shooting nearby.

The crash occurred around 9:17 p.m. Wednesday, according to the LAFD.

At that location, police said one victim was down. The exact nature of the shooting victim's condition was not available.

Following a pursuit, police said the van crashed into the fire truck -- on its way to a medical call -- at Main near Manchester.

At least two people had to be extricated out of the van, officials said.

The van also caught fire following the crash, witnesses said.

"There is an army of police and firefighters out here," Mundel reported, "This is a chase of mega proportions."

By 9:35 p.m., one of the suspects was declared dead at the scene.

One LAFD member was being "medically assessed" at the scene.

Andrea Fujii reported from the scene for the CBS2 News at 11 p.m.

She said that firefighter was treated "for minor injuries."
