Officers Open Fire On Stolen Car Leading Chase In Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities in a Southern California coastal city say police arrested a stolen-car suspect after opening fire on him when he drove at officers.

The suspect was not struck by the gunfire Sunday in Laguna Beach.

A pursuit began when police tried to stop a Toyota Corolla with a man and a woman inside. The car had been reported stolen out of Palm Springs.

As the Toyota drove on narrow residential roads toward the beach, the female passenger either jumped or was pushed from the car.

Sgt. Jim Cota says that's when the car came toward police, and officers opened fire. The driver ran from the car, sprinting through backyards before being arrested.

The suspect, 55-year-old Richard Lewis of Redlands, could face vehicle theft charges, according to the Orange County Register.
