18-year-old arrested for Santa Monica Pier shooting that wounded two

A large fight broke out on the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday night, leading to a shooting and arrest, according to police.

Circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation, but Santa Monica Police Department officers said that the shooting happened at around 9 p.m.

Investigators say that a "large fight involving multiple individuals occurred prior to the gunfire."

According to police, a person was shot in the arm and transported to a local hospital to receive treatment. The person, who is yet to be publicly identified, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Another person, identified as 18-year-old Jaysawn Williams of Rialto, was also transported to a local hospital to be treated for a graze wound. Police said he was later identified as the shooting suspect, and he was arrested shortly after receiving medical treatment.

Williams was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm, police said. It's not yet clear how he was grazed with a bullet.

Portions of the pier were briefly closed off for the investigation, but the pier was fully operational as of Monday afternoon.

"This remains an active investigation," police said. "Additional information will be released as it becomes available."
