Man killed in police shooting at El Monte gas station
One person is dead after a police shooting took place at a gas station in El Monte on Thursday night.
Officers from the El Monte Police Department responded to the Route 66 gas station on Garvey and Durfee Avenue around 10:30 p.m. after receiving several calls of a domestic violence incident.
After arriving, the suspect's vehicle collided with the patrol unit. An officer-involved shooting took place after one of the officers fired their gun, hitting a 26-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday, the suspect was identified as Juan Martin Avila Mercado by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
The officer received non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and was taken to a local hospital, where they were later released.
Police said the alleged victim was also taken to the hospital for "injuries sustained during the assault by the suspect."
The California Department of Justice California Police Shooting Investigation Team responded and is investigating the incident.
SkyCal flew over the aftermath of the shooting on Thursday night, where two patrol cars could be seen wedging another vehicle in place in the parking lot of the gas station. There was significant damage to the passenger side of the suspect's vehicle, but it's unclear where the damage came from. The female victim was also seen as she was wheeled into the back of an ambulance.
A large part of the intersection remained blocked off until early Friday morning as the police investigation continued.
