Murder suspect leads police pursuit through Los Angeles

CBS News Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Police Department was in pursuit of a murder suspect in South LA.

The suspect recklessly drove through city streets by driving on the wrong side of the road, nearly colliding with other vehicles while cutting through red lights.

After weaving through traffic, the suspect entered the 110 Freeway and cut off other drivers to get onto the left shoulder.

He sped past traffic at roughly 95 to 100 mph.

The driver sideswiped a wall and partially sheared off the car's rear bumper. Despite the collision and the now-dragging rear bumper, the suspect continued to reach speeds as high as 100 mph while weaving past traffic.

The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit and used a spike strip to puncture the suspect's tires shortly after the crash. The driver quickly exited the freeway in Compton and continued to evade police, but at a much slower pace.

Police considered using a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit, but refrained from it after learning the suspect could have been armed.

After driving around South LA for more than an hour, a bystander threw a large item at the suspect's car near E. 87th Street and Main Street.

The roughly 1.5-hour pursuit ended after LAPD officers trapped him on a residential street near the intersection of 92nd Street and Main Street in Southeast LA.
