Moreno Valley Mom To Speak At RNC About Her Son's Death, Illegal Immigration

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Moreno Valley mother has been invited to speak Monday at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Sabine Durden will speak about her son Dominic. "I'm going to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, and I get to share Dominic's story again on a big platform," she said.

The Moreno Valley mother talked with CBS2/KCAL9's Rachel Kim via Skype from Arkansas on Friday night as she prepared for her big event.

Dominic Durden, 30, was a 911 dispatcher for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. In 2012 as he was on his way to work on his motorcycle, he was hit and killed by an undocumented immigrant, who Durden said was a convicted felon for offenses including DUIs.

"He got busted again while he was on probation again with a DUI, and they let him go again. Five weeks later, he killed Dominic," Durden said.

Since her son's death, Durden has been speaking out against illegal immigration. When she was contacted by Donald Trump's campaign last year to speak at rallies, she felt Trump finally gave her son a voice.

"He just sat with us in a room and let us share our stories and then he told us: 'OK, nobody wants to listen to you. I got you.' "

On Monday night at the Republican National Convention, Durden plans to talk about enforcing immigration policy and the impact of illegal immigration.

"We have to do this so no other family will ever know this kind of grief and pain and added stress because it could've been avoided," Durden said. "My son would still be here enjoying his life. He was the love of my life. He was my only child and my best friend."
