Huntington Beach Police Officers, Suspect Hurt In Shooting

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities Thursday investigated an officer-involved shooting in Huntington Beach that reportedly left two officers injured and a suspect shot.

The shooting occurred about 7 a.m. near Delaware Street and Toronto Avenue, where there was a report of a man "possibly slashing tires with a knife," Police Chief Robert Handy said.

While a knife was recovered at the scene, it was unclear if the suspect had a gun, or if the officers may have been shot in a case of "friendly fire", Handy said.

KCAL 9's Michele Gile spoke to witnesses who said it appeared one officer was shot, accidentally, by his partner. The suspect was wounded by gunfire. The other officer reportedly injured by flying debris, likely glass.

Police spokeswoman Angela Bennett says the male suspect approached the officers and at least one of the officers drew his weapon.

Bennett says two Huntington Beach police officers were wounded and taken to a hospital in stable condition. She wouldn't say how they were injured.

The suspect's condition wasn't immediately known. Gile said the man, in his 20s, was expected to make a full recovery.

Police she reported were called to the scene, originally, about a man who was reportedly slashing tires.

One witness said when he left his house he saw the commotion and heard 4-5 shots.

"I saw the cops running through the front yard," he said, "and they were helping someone. When I was taking my kids to school I noticed someone was down in the alley in pajamas."

Orange County sheriff's detectives were sent to investigate the shooting, according to the Orange County Sheriff's department.
