Driver Killed In Fiery Crash At Fullerton Construction Site

FULLERTON (CBSLA) — The driver of a minivan was killed Wednesday after losing control, hitting a traffic control box and slamming into a construction site in Fullerton.

The crash was reported by a witness just after 1 a.m. in the area of Harbor and Brea Boulevards, an area commonly known as the "Brea Y." The 2007 Toyota Siena minivan immediately burst into flames, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Only the minivan was involved in the crash, and no one else was hurt. A preliminary investigation found that the van was driving northbound on Harbor Boulevard when it veered off the road as it approached the "Brea Y" and hit a traffic signal pole on an island in the intersection, sending it spinning out of control. Police say the van then hit a traffic signal bank and went up an embankment where it finally stopped near a building under construction.

The driver, a male of unknown age, was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity is being held pending notification of his family.

Police are looking into whether factors like speed, drugs or alcohol or weather may have led to the crash.

The intersection is expected to stay closed till at least 11:30 a.m. for the fatal crash investigation.
