Fiery San Bernardino crash leaves 2 dead, 1 injured
A fiery crash in San Bernardino left two people dead and another person injured on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The San Bernardino Police Department said that at 7:15 a.m., employees of an ARCO gas station located on Mountain View and Highland avenues reported that a man had been acting erratically at the station before slumping over the steering wheel of a Volvo vehicle.
While responding, officers saw a vehicle going the opposite direction at a rate of speed of about 80 miles per hour, matching the description of the Volvo.
Officers made a U-turn to follow the Volvo when they saw multiple vehicles on fire in the same direction. The crash involved four vehicles on Highland Avenue, east of Del Rosa Avenue. Three of the vehicles involved burst into flames, witnesses told CBS LA.
"It just blew up into a ball of fire," said Leeartis Hayes, who witnessed the crash. "Just a big ball of fire and nobody could get into the car to get anybody out."
Hayes said that the Volvo slammed into a car turning left through the intersection, just feet from where he and his wife were sitting in their own car.
A total of two people, including the Volvo driver, were killed. They're yet to be identified publicly.
Another person was treated for minor injuries.
It's not clear whether the man driving the Volvo was having a medical emergency or if his actions were a result of another factor.
