Family Remembers Good Samaritan Shot And Killed In Paramount Liquor Store Robbery

PARAMOUNT (CBSLA.com) — A 45-year-old good Samaritan who was shot and killed on Monday as he tried to stop a liquor store robbery in Paramount was remembered by family on Tuesday as a generous, family-oriented man.

The shooting took place at Tequila Ranch Liquor & Beer near the corner of Somerset and Paramount boulevards at around 4 p.m. after two suspects began stealing beer and other goods from the store and got into a fight with a store employee who tried to stop them.

That's when Alfredo Alvarado stepped in and tried to help the employee. At that time, a third male suspect who had been in an apparent getaway vehicle parked in an alley entered the store and shot both the employee and Alvarado.

Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene. The employee was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive.

"He was a very good person," Alvarado's nephew, Juan Gutierrez, said. "He was trying to help people."

Alvarado leaves behind a wife and teenage daughter. He was planning a trip to Mexico with his wife to renew their wedding vows in honor of their 25-year anniversary,

The shooting suspect was described by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as a male 17-to-20 years old, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, with a scar or tattoo on his left check. The other suspects were also males 17-to-20 years old, deputies said.

They were seen leaving the store in a white imported sedan with tinted windows.

The Sheriff's Department plans to release security camera footage of the robbery soon.
