Queen Elizabeth II Sends First Tweet

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The Pope is on Twitter, as is former President George H.W. Bush. and now Queen Elizabeth II has joined the world of social media.

Her Majesty The Queen sent the tweet Friday to mark the opening of the Information Age exhibition at the Science Museum in London.

The Tweet was sent through the British Monarchy account:

Embracing technology is something The Queen has done throughout her reign. Her Christmas Broadcast was first televised in 1957, she was the first Monarch to send an email during a visit to an Army base in 1976 and launched British Monarchy website in 1997.

She also allowed cameras inside Westminster Abbey for the first time during a State occasion for her Coronation, according to the British Monarchy. An extra half a million TV sets were sold in the weeks leading up to the event.
