Police Charge Two In Hit-And-Run Crash That Critically Injured 8-Year-Old Getting Ice Cream

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Sunday that Cortney Sheilds, 23, and Leonard Crosby, 19, both of Detroit, were charged in connection with the hit and run car crash that critically injured an 8-year-old girl.

It happened at 4:20 p.m. May 19. A witness said the little girl was on her way to buy ice cream when she was hit on Robeson Street near Fenkell and Greenfield.

Neighbor Johnny Russel said the victim had just been playing with his daughter before she was hit. She left his home and walked across the street to where an ice cream truck was parked, he said.

"The (Dodge) Charger came through the stop sign doing about 50 miles an hour, hit the little girl behind that black Volkswagen right there, flipped her up," Russel said. "Yeah, he hit the ice cream truck then she flipped over and hit the car right there."

Police said the driver stopped only briefly at the scene and then spend off.

Shields has been charged with reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death. Crosby has been charged with accessory after the fact.

Both defendants had video arraignments in 34th District Court in Romulus, prosecutors said.
