Monroe Couple Shoots Migrant Worker During 'Target Practice'

MONROE (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a migrant farm worker in Monroe County was shot by a couple who was shooting targets nearby.

The sheriff's office said the 37-year-old man was shot in the stomach area at a Raisinville Township farm around 7 p.m. Monday. He underwent surgery to remove the bullet and is expected to survive.

Police said more than 40 migrant workers took cover as bullets landed nearby, although no one else was injured.

Deputies began searching for a source of the gunfire and found a 26-year-old Monroe man and his 23-year-old wife at their house nearby. The couple told authorities they were shooting targets and were unaware they hit anyone.

Deputies say a target in the couple's backyard was in line with where the migrant workers had been working, about 250 yards away.

The couple is expected to face charges of discharging a firearm causing injury.

The incident remains under investigation.
