It's Pi Day: Time To Get Your Math On!

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's March 14 and Pi Day is being celebrated in and around math classes across the continents.

You don't have to be a nerdy techie to celebrate but it may have a little more meaning. March 14 translates to 3/14 and the natural extension to the mathematical representation of a constant - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter - which is approximately 3.14159. Follow?

Pi (Greek) is the symbol used in math to represent that number. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern.

In 2004, British writer, essayist and autistic savant Daniel Tammet created a European record for reciting pi from memory to 22,514 digits in five hours and nine minutes.

So while you may not see workmates bringing in pie to honor the day - it's still a day to celebrate all the ways that math makes life work for us everyday.
