Happy Birthday Faygo! Detroit's Favorite Pop Turns 109

DETROIT (WWJ) - Happy 109th birthday to Faygo!

The company was founded on November 4, 1907 as Feigenson Brother Bottling Works, by immigrant bakers from Russia. The original flavors -- fruit punch, strawberry and grape -- were based on their own cake recipes.

In the 1920s, Ben and Perry Feigenson shortened the name to Faygo because it was too long to print on bottles.

The brothers are also credited with coining the term "pop" -- because of the sound made when opening a bottle.

With more than 50 flavors available, Faygo is now owned by National Beverage Corp of Florida but it still operates a bottling plant on Gratiot Avenue.
