Sterling Heights man dead after crash on Interstate 696

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Interstate 696 in Oakland County, the Michigan State Police Second District reported. 

The crash happened about 5:25 a.m. on westbound I-696, east of Dequindre Road in Warren. The driver of a 2022 Kia Sportage was westbound on I-696 when he vehicle drove onto the left shoulder, struck a construction zone sign and hit the left wall. 

The vehicle then crossed all travel lanes and struck the right side wall, resulting in a rollover. 

The driver, a 51-year-old Sterling Heights man, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Troopers are waiting on a medical examiner's report "to determine if the driver was impaired or a medical emergency occurred," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said the press release. 

Westbound I-696 at Dequindre was closed until about 9:45 a.m. for the on-site investigation.
