Dad, Son Jump From Second Story Of Burning Home In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man and his young son are recovering after jumping out of a window of their home to escape a fast-moving fire.

The fire took off early Friday morning at a home on the corner of Harlow and Cambridge avenues, in a west side neighborhood near 7 Mile Road and the Southfield Freeway.

The man, said to be in his 30s, and the 9-year-old boy reportedly pushed an air conditioning unit out of a second story window and jumped to safety. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Firefighters responded to the home but the hydrant out front was not operational, so crews had to take hoses over a block away to access water. Crews kept the flames from spreading to another other structures, but not before the fire destroyed the back portion of the home.

Authorities say a cause of the fire remains under investigation.
