2-Week-Old Detroit Girl Found Dead, Might Have Been Smothered By Sleeping Mother

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating the death of a 2-week-old girl who was found unresponsive after apparently falling asleep with her mother at their east side home.

The incident unfolded just before 6 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 12000 block of Barlow, in a neighborhood along McNichols Road near Gratiot Avenue.

The baby and mother were reportedly sleeping in the same bed, and the infant might have been smothered. Medics rushed the newborn to St. John's Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say it's unclear if an adult rolled over on the baby. An autopsy is expected to determine a cause of death.

An investigation is ongoing.
