Sheriff Maketa Admits 'Inappropriate Behavior,' Won't Step Down

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - The El Paso County Sheriff has apologized for his behavior but says he has no intention of resigning.

Sheriff Terry Maketa spoke about the allegations against him for the first time on Saturday in a video apology to his department. Maketa reportedly had inappropriate relationships with his subordinates.

In the video Maketa admitted he "engaged in inappropriate behavior in the past."

"When confronted about that behavior I denied it, thereby compounding the problem," Maketa said in the video.

The video was posted on an internal website for sheriff's office employees after a Colorado Springs Gazette report came out about sexual impropriety, discrimination and a hostile work environment.

County commissioners unanimously agreed Maketa should step down but he can only be removed through a recall vote.
