Boy Scouts Rescued Off Ice Field, Will Carry On With Camping Trip

OURAY, Colo. (CBS4)- Rescue crews were able to successfully get a Boy Scout troop off an ice field when they ran into trouble after the weather changed, but in true Boy Scout tradition, the group decided to carry on with their hiking and camping trip.

The group of about 43 Boy Scouts and adults were camping and hiking near the Richmond Pass/Ironton area south of the town of Ouray when weather conditions changed.

Marti Whitmore, a spokeswoman for Ouray County, says the group called for help getting out of the deep snow and icy conditions Wednesday morning. The group is from Arizona.

Rescuers with Ouray Mountain Rescue felt it was a good idea to help the scouts get down the mountain because the rain had started to freeze, causing icy conditions on the trail. There were minor injuries among the group but everyone was accounted for and just "cold, wet and tired" according to the rescue team.

The troop was assisted down from the ice field the the trailhead but they decided to stick with their trip and stay on the mountain.
