Officers ID Man Who Walked Into Denver Police Station With Gun
DENVER (CBS4) - Authorities in Denver say they have identified a man who drove his car onto a police station's front lawn and then walked inside armed with a gun.
Daniel Ruiz was taken into custody in the case, and so far it's not clear what charges he might face.
Witnesses say more than a dozen officers responded late Monday morning when the suspect drove his car onto the front lawn of the Denver Police District 4 station, located near the intersection of West Evans Avenue and South Clay Street.
The man police say was Ruiz then walked into the station and allegedly began screaming at officers.
It's not clear if any of what the suspect said was a threat, but the bomb squad was called in as a precaution. Police temporarily evacuated nearby businesses and intiated safety procedures at a nearby school.
"We did have a school that was behind the district station that was put on lockdown," said Denver police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez.
The intersection was closed for about a half hour while police investigated, and no bomb was found in the vehicle.
"We weren't sure what was in the vehicle. This male party was armed and it was very important for us that we call our bomb squad so that they can make sure the vehicle was clear," Lopez said.
Police were able to take the suspect into custody without injury.
Ruiz is being held on tentative charges of felony menacing, reckless endangerment and introduction of contraband into a facility.
