Neighbors Concerned About Proposed Shooting Range

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Some people who live near the property for a proposed shooting range in Jefferson County are concerned about the noise.

The location is just south of 82nd and east of Highway 93.

Al Brooks has lived in the same home for the past 50 years. It's less than half a mile from the proposed shooting range.

"It's just an absolute ridiculous proposition this close to where people live," said Brooks. "The noise, number one, would ruin my peaceful existence. Number two, not everybody is a professional gun person."

Tom Hoby, the Director of Jeffco Open Space Parks and Trails said the issue was brought to their attention by concerned gun enthusiasts.

"What's happening now particularly on various public lands is you're having a lot of dispersed shooting occurring without containment of the ammunition, without any environmental cleanup efforts there and they are really not as safe and environmentally friendly as they can be," said Hoby.

Murph Widdowfield was among those at Tuesday's community meeting. He believes safety is a big factor in why he hopes the facility is built.

"I don't like the idea of going up into the mountains, going out into the open and trying to find what is down range and what I'm shooting at," said Widdowfield.

Tuesday's meeting focused primarily on the noise concerns and the results of a recent noise study. There was also discussion of how to mitigate the sound of gunshots in the area.
