Durango High School Twitter Gossip Site Shut Down

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — A Twitter account that spread gossip about students at Durango High School, often criticizing people by name, has been shut down but another similar one is still operating.

The gossip account was shut down Thursday evening hours after the school filed a complaint with Twitter. Another account set up for students to post confessions but sometimes used to post gossip was still operating Friday although the school district has also asked for it to be taken down.

The gossip account tweets included derogatory statements about students' sexual orientation, promiscuity and physical appearance along with posts about crushes.

A Twitter spokesman, Nu Wexler, told The Durango Herald he couldn't comment on individual accounts, citing privacy and security reasons. However, he said Twitter rules ban targeted abuse and posting private information.
