CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was struck and killed by a Metra train Tuesday morning in north suburban Highwood, causing significant delays for commuters during the morning rush.

The Highwood Fire Department said a woman was trying to beat an express train on the Union Pacific/North Line around 8 a.m., when she was struck by a train while crossing the tracks at the Highwood station.

The woman was taken to Highland Park Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.

Trains were halted for nearly an hour after the accident, and though they were running again by shortly after 9 a.m., delays on the UP/North Line stretched into late Tuesday morning.

An inbound train scheduled to leave Waukegan at 10:10 a.m., and arrive at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago at 11:28 a.m. was canceled.

Several other inbound and outbound trains were delayed between 30 and 100 minutes, according to Metra.
