Woman Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run In Avalon Park

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman was charged with reckless homicide after she left the scene of a fatal crash in the Avalon Park neighborhood Saturday night, police said.

Alicia Johnson, 22, was charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving injury or death, both felonies, according to a statement from Chicago Police. She also faces on misdemeanor count of failing to exercise due care with a pedestrian in the roadway.

A 51-year-old man was walking in a crosswalk about 11:15 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Stony Island Avenue when he was struck by a southbound red Impala, police said. The car sped away after the crash.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was not released Sunday morning, pending notification of his family.

Johnson, of the 9700 block of South Avalon, is scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday.
