U Of I Students Can Leave Quarters At Home As Laundry Now Included In Housing Costs

(CBS) -- When students return to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign next week for the spring semester, there's one thing they can leave at home: quarters.

Quarters - or swipe cards- are no longer needed to do laundry in the 40 laundry rooms at dorms and university-owned apartments.

Associate director of Housing Kirsten Ruby says the university has updated its swipe card system and instead of getting all new washers and dryers, roughly 500 total, they decided to make the cost of laundry included.

Housing fees are locked in for enrolled students but Ruby she says incoming freshman are likely to see a 100 dollar increase next year to cover the cost.

Ruby says this may prevent students from overstuffing the machines but she can't promise it will prevent them from bringing giant bags of dirty clothes when they go home at spring break.

Classes resume next Tuesday but students can return to campus as soon as tomorrow.
