Stocks Close Mixed; Dow Pressured By Disney

By Andy Giersher

(CBS) -- Stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, giving back most of the session's early gains, as disappointing earnings and falling crude oil prices kept financial markets in check.

The S&P 500 added 7, the NASDAQ gained 34 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 10 points, settling to 17,540.

"It's kind of been a mixed market for the past few weeks, even though the averages have been generally higher, there's been more stocks down then up. We're seeing many days where it's really a tug of war to get the markets to go higher or lower," says Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management.

He adds that the tight trading range for equity markets should continue for the balance of the year.
