State Street Bridge To Close For Riverwalk Work

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The State Street Bridge over the Chicago River will be closed for 10 days starting Wednesday, as part of the ongoing construction and expansion of the Riverwalk.

The Chicago Department of Transportation said the bridge will be closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. Wednesday through the afternoon of Aug. 23.

Crews are working on a project to expand the Chicago Riverwalk by creating a continuous pedestrian path on the south bank of the river from State Street to Lake Street. A pedestrian trail on the south bank already stretches from State Street to the lakefront.

While the State Street bridge is closed for the Riverwalk project, all northbound vehicle traffic -- including CTA buses -- will detour north to LaSalle Street between Wacker Drive and Illinois Street. All southbound traffic will be diverted to Clark Street between Grand Avenue and Wacker Drive. Bicycles will be detoured to the protected two-way bike lanes on Dearborn Street.
