Aragon Ballroom Wall Collapses Under Weight Of Heavy Snow

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A part of the exterior wall collapsed Tuesday morning at the Aragon Ballroom in Uptown, sending bricks into the alley and disrupting service on two nearby CTA train lines.

The Chicago Fire Department said part of the west roof parapet wall collapsed under the weight of heavy snow at the Aragon Ballroom, at 1106 W. Lawrence Ave., around 7:45 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the Fire Department said the roof itself appeared intact.

Ald. James Cappleman (46th) tweeted a picture showing bricks in the alley and on a fire escape along the rear of the Aragon Ballroom.

The CTA said service was disrupted for part of Tuesday morning on the Red Line and Purple Line Express, which run on elevated tracks across the alley from the Aragon Ballroom.

By noon, trains were running normally again, although they were bypassing the Lawrence station, where debris had been reported on the tracks.

Chicago was belted with two rounds of heavy wet snow over the past week. Between the two storms, more than 16 inches of snow fell on the city.
