Police shot man armed with knife in Aurora, Illinois
A man armed with a knife was shot by police in Aurora, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon.
The department said around 12:35 p.m., police were on the scene investigating what they called "a criminal matter" in the 300 block of South Broadway. They later said the incident involved an officer who discharged their firearm.
Further information indicated that a man, whose age was not released, barricaded himself inside a residential building that neighbors two gas stations with a weapon and displayed a knife. Police did not say what floor the man was on or if any other people were inside the building at the time.
Shortly after officers responded, police said they fired at the man who suffered at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition.
Police said more than one officer was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. The exact number of officers taken was not shared.
Aurora police said there was no risk to the public, but asked people to steer clear of the immediate area due to the large police presence. Motorists are also advised to use alternate routes.
The department said it will release more information as it becomes available.
