Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Metra Train Near Oak Lawn

(STMW) -- A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra train on the SouthWest Service line Thursday evening near southwest suburban Oak Lawn, according to the transit agency.

Outbound train No. 829, scheduled to arrive in Manhattan at 7:07 p.m., struck the pedestrian about 6:20 p.m. near the Oak Lawn Station, 9525 S. Tulley Ave. in Oak Lawn, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.

Gillis said the pedestrian died, but additional information was not immediately available. The Cook County medical examiner's office did not confirm the fatality.

As of 7 p.m., outbound trains remained halted in the area, according to the transit agency. Extensive delays were anticipated. Outbound train No. 831, schedule to arrive at 179th at 7:21 p.m., was operating 26 minutes behind schedule and will accommodate train No. 829's passengers.

Inbound train No. 836, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 6:44 p.m., was on the move, but operating up to 40 minutes behind schedule, Metra said.

Oak Lawn police could not be immediately reached to provide further details.
