Metra holiday train hits man on Chicago's West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Metra train struck a man on the city's West Side Friday evening, halting traffic in both directions on the Milwaukee District West line.
Metra said Train No. 2243 hit a pedestrian near the Mars station near Oak Park and Shakespeare avenues – so named because it serves the Mars Wrigley candy factory directly behind it.
Metra confirmed the train that hit the man was a holiday train. Late last month, Metra began running holiday trains decorated with twinkling red and green lights and playing holiday tunes.
Metra said the pedestrian was alive, but in an unknown condition, upon being rushed to an area hospital. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
Trains in both directions were halted after the incident, Metra said.
The people on the train that hit the man were transferred onto another train, No. 2247, which was back running by 8:20 p.m. – but with a 50-minute delay.
