Cyclist Dies After Being Hit By Metra Train

(STMW) --  A cyclist died Thursday evening when she was hit by a Metra train in northwest suburban Des Plaines.

Train no. 639 on the Union Pacific Northwest Line struck the cyclist about 6 p.m. near the Cumberland station, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.

The cyclist, a woman possibly in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:15 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Her identity was still unknown Thursday night.

The outbound train had left Chicago at 5:12 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Barrington at 6:17 p.m., according to Metra.

Trains in both directions were stopped for about and hour and 20 minutes as crews investigated the scene, Gillis said.

Inbound and outbound trains were back on the move shortly after 7 p.m., Metra said. Trains were moving about 45 minutes to two hours behind schedule.

Neither the Des Plaines Police Department nor fire officials could immediately provide additional details Thursday night.
