Chicago Singer Shot, Critically Injured, After Leaving His Own Birthday Celebration

(CBS) -- The owner of a popular performing arts studio was critically wounded late Thursday in a Brighton Park shooting after leaving his own birthday party.

Alejandro "Jano" Fuentes, 45, was in a vehicle outside his Tras Bambalinas School in the 4300 block of South Archer at 10:15 p.m. when someone with a gun walked up and ordered him to get out, police said.

When he resisted, the suspect shot him in the head.

Fuentes rose to fame as a contestant on the Mexican version of "The Voice." He was at his studio celebrating his birthday with family and friends. When he left the party, friends say, he was ambushed in the parking lot.

"Last night was a very hard time for us. Mr. Jano Fuentes was shot three times for somebody who was targeting him," friend Miguel Sanchez tells CBS 2's Mai Martinez.

Fuentes was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital. All day Friday a steady stream of people came to visit.

"The doctors say he's in very critical condition but the good thing is he still there, still fighting," Sanchez says.

The offender ran a short distance before getting in a vehicle and leaving the scene.

A fundraising page has been started to help Fuentes.
