Honor Flight takes 10,000th veteran to Washington D.C. after last month's cancellation

Veterans return after honor flight to Washington, D.C.

CHICAGO (CBS) - Honor Flight Chicago took off from Midway International Airport Wednesday morning to take its 10,000th veteran to Washington D.C.

The 113 veterans were originally supposed to take the trip on April 5 but bad weather kept them grounded.

But on Wednesday, veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam headed to the Nation's Capital to visit the war memorials and be celebrated for their service.

They returned to Chicago Wednesday evening to a welcome home celebration.

"I can't thank them enough for their sacrifice; their bravery that they've shown to give us the home that we have now," said Navy Electrician's Mate and Honor Flight Escort Julian Passi.

We also want to give a special thank you to veteran Erik Godvik – father of CBS 2 producer Beth Godvik. Mr. Godvik got a big hug at Midway from his granddaughter, Lilliana, after returning from the Honor Flight.
