Fire at Southwest Side Chicago home leaves elderly woman dead, CFD confirms

CHICAGO (CBS) – An elderly woman has died following a fire on Chicago's Southwest Side Sunday.

Fire officials said the fire happened in the 5400 block of South Mulligan Avenue. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. 

The age of the victim was not immediately available. 

According to Chicago Fire Department officials, the fire was caused by smoking materials in proximity to supplemental medical oxygen. 

The house did have a working smoke alarm, but no one else was home at the time of the incident.
