Elderly Woman Dies After Brighton Park Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An elderly Texas woman died Monday night after she was hurt in a crash last week in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

A 2005 Saturn was travelling northeast on Archer Avenue approaching Sacramento Avenue about 6:50 p.m. Jan. 31 when the driver tried to make a U-turn and hit a Chevy Astro van, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The 58-year-old man who was driving the Saturn and the 83-year-old woman who was his passenger, later identified as Maria Demunoz, were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Demunoz, of McAllen, Texas, was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai at 10:32 p.m. Feb. 3, the medical examiner's office said.

Two people from the van were also taken to Holy Cross Hospital after the crash with minor injuries, Alfaro said.

The Saturn's driver was cited for making a U-turn when it was unsafe to do so, Alfaro said.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
