2 people dead, 10 hurt in shootings across Chicago in first weekend of new year, according to police

At least two people were killed, and 10 more were hurt, in shootings across Chicago in the first weekend of the new year. 

The ages of the victims range from 16 to 58, according to Chicago police.

Shootings from Friday

In the first shooting of the weekend, police responded to a call of a person shot around 10 p.m. in the 7900 block of South East End Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim, a 33-year-old man, who told them that his was shot in the left leg. Police said he was uncooperative in providing further details about the incident.

He was taken on scene by fire crews and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 

Less than an hour later, around 10:50 p.m. in the 11400 block of South Lowe Avenue, police responded to a call of a person shot inside a residence and found a 58-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the stomach and a gunshot wound to the right thigh.

The victim was unable to provide further details of the incident, police said.

He was treated on scene by fire crews and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

Shootings from Saturday

  • At 9:27 a.m., a 51-year-old man was found unresponsive in a residence in the 6700 block of South Jeffery Boulevard with gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and back. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and a homicide investigation was launched.
  • At 2:27 p.m. in the 200 block of West 38th Street, a 32-year-old man was standing in a parking lot with a group of people when a gray sedan with four occupants pulled alongside and one of them from inside began firing gunshots at the victim, hitting him in the elbow. He fled the scene and self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital for treatment in good condition.
  • At 4:59 p.m. in the 7700 block of South Homan Avenue, a 46-year-old man was sitting inside a residence when he was hit by gunfire in his leg. He was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition. Further investigation indicated that the gunfire came from outside the residence and pierced through the window.
  • At 9:46 p.m., an 18-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 7800 block of South Kingston Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain. He had been shot in the leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Shootings from Sunday

  • At 5:57 p.m. in the 800 block of East 79th Street, a 33-year-old man was in a parking lot when he was approached by a stolen Kia. At least one unknown suspect exited the vehicle, produced a handgun, and fired shots. The victim was struck multiple times in the body and was taken to the U of C Medical Center in critical condition. Officers later found the stolen Kia in the 8200 block of South Woodlawn. One suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was taken into custody. Another suspect managed to escape. It was later found that the 17-year-old was shot in the stomach and was taken to the U of C Medical Center in critical condition. There are no other offenders in custody.
  • At 9:23 p.m., a 37-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were in a vehicle headed north in the 3300 block of South Western Boulevard when a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot them. The woman was shot in the back and arm and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. The man was shot in the arm and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
  • At 9:52 p.m., a 43-year-old man was standing outside in the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard when a white sport-utility vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire at the man. The victim flagged down a Chicago Transit Authority bus driver for help and called 911. He later died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Shootings from Monday

  • At 3:49 a.m., a 16-year-old boy was walking in the 7900 block of South Ashland Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain. He was shot in the left hand and self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.

Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in the above shootings.
