Chicago Cops Shoot Hoops With Kids On West Side

(CBS) -- Chicago Police officers are shooting hoops with hundreds of kids hoping to break down barriers.

The YMCA at Central and Race in the Austin neighborhood was packed this afternoon.

One community leader says it's an opportunity to bring together Chicago Police officers and young people to bridge differences.

"There is a crisis relative to unemployment in our community, there is a crisis relative to gun violence and overall violence so this was an opportunity to bring people together, have the youth actually drive the discussion and drive solutions for all of the ills that confront our society," said Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin.

Commissioner Boykin says they will continue to have these types of events to build trust and bond over basketball.
