Body Found After Fire In Vacant Gary Building

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- A body burned beyond recognition was found following a fire at a vacant building in northwest Indiana early Wednesday.

Firefighters discovered the body in the doorway of a vacant building in the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Street in Gary as they were extinguishing the blaze a few minutes after midnight, according to Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King.

King said foul play is "definitely suspected."

The body was burned beyond recognition and has not been identified, she said.

Cause and manner of death are pending further examination, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.
