Armed robbery suspect captured following chase in Dunning

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An armed robbery suspect has been charged after a police chase from Rogers Park across the city to the Dunning neighborhood.

Illinois State Police said a trooper was patrolling on the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 31st Street when they noticed a reported stolen car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled the scene, and the trooper lost sight of the car.

A short time later, Chicago police and air support located the car in the area of Diversey and Central Park avenues and initiated a pursuit, ISP said.

The car stopped in the 3900 block of North Neva Avenue, near Byron Street, where the suspect fled on foot.

Authorities chased the suspect on foot and placed him in custody. A weapon was also recovered.

Lincolnwood police were also at the scene, as the car may have been stolen from the northern suburb.

The suspect, Safaeldin Daheya, 22, of Albany Park, was charged late Thursday with five armed robberies in West Rogers Park Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Police said he robbed a 23-year-old man in the 6200 block of North Talman Avenue, a 19-year-old man in the 6300 block of North Rockwell Street, a 44-year-old man in the 6300 block of North California Avenue, a 37-year-old man in the 6300 block of North Campbell Avenue, and a 23-year-old man in the 6400 block of North Washtenaw Avenue.

Daheya was charged with four felony counts of armed robbery with a firearm, and also with being an armed habitual criminal, aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing, cocaine possession, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

He is to appear for a bond hearing on Friday.
